['ʃøːval], Maj, schwedische Schriftstellerin, * Stockholm 25. 9. 1935; verfasste zwischen 1965 und 1975 mit ihrem Mann P. Wahlöö den zehnbändigen Romanzyklus »Roman om ett brott« (deutsch »Roman über ein Verbrechen«; zum Teil verfilmt), der unter Ausnutzung des publikumswirksamen Genres Kriminalroman eine kritische Analyse der schwedischen Gesellschaft bietet.
 
Werke: Romanzyklus: Roman om ett brott: Roseanna (1965; deutsch Die Tote im Götakanal), Mannen som gick upp i rök (1966; deutsch Der Mann, der sich in Luft auflöste), Mannen på balkongen (1967; deutsch Der Mann auf dem Balkon), Den skrattande polisen (1968; deutsch Endstation für neun), Brandbilen som försvann (1969; deutsch Alarm in Sköldgatan), Polis, polis, potatismos! (1970; deutsch Und die Großen läßt man laufen), Den vedervärdige mannen från Säffle (1971; deutsch Das Ekel aus Säffle), Det slutna rummet (1972; deutsch Verschlossen und verriegelt), Polismördaren (1974; deutsch Der Polizistenmörder), Terroristerna (1975; deutsch Die Terroristen).
 
Weiterer Roman: Kvinnan som liknade Greta Garbo (1990, mit T. Ross; deutsch Eine Frau wie Greta Garbo).
